Questions and answers:
Voting in the 2006 Arlington GOP canvass

More on the race: In the news:

What's a "canvass"?
An election for party office or party nomination. It's open to all voters with secret ballots (similar to a primary), but voting is at one central location, and the process is run by the party organization (not the local board of elections).

Why is there a canvass election for party chairman this year?
Because two candidates (Jeff Miller and Landey Patton) filed for the position of Arlington County GOP Chairman. Republican voters will select the new party chairman.

Who's eligible to vote?
Any registered voter in Arlington County. Voters at the canvass will be asked to sign a pledge indicating their intent to support our Republican nominees this fall.

Why the pledge form?
Because voters in Virginia do not register by party. The pledge form is not binding, but it helps to assure that those who vote in this election for Republican Party office are bona fide Republicans.

When and where can I vote?
Voting will be this Saturday, March 11, from 10 am to 2 pm. All voting will be at one location: the Lyon Village Community House, 1920 N. Highland St. (just off Lee Hwy. - see map). That's the location of the annual Republican Women's Club Spaghetti Supper. (Please note: The location is Lyon Village, not Lyon Park.)

I'm not a member of the County Republican Committee. Can I still vote?
Yes! Any registered voter may participate in the canvass, as long as he/she signs the pledge to support GOP candidates this fall.

Can I vote absentee?
Sorry, but the canvass rules don't allow for early voting or absentee voting. You must vote in person at the Lyon Village Community House on Sat., March 11, between 10 am and 2 pm.

Do I need to sign up in advance or pay a fee?
No! There's no requirement for pre-registration, and no charge to participate. Just show up at the Lyon Village Community House on Sat., March 11, between 10 am and 2 pm.

How long will this take?
Not long at all - there's no meeting or program involved. Just go to the Lyon Village Community House and go to the check-in desk. One of the volunteer officials will check to make sure you're registered to vote and then hand you a ballot. Mark your ballot for Jeff Miller and drop it in the box -- and that's it, you're done! Of course, you're welcome to stay at the Community House for a while and talk with other Republicans at the canvass, if you like.

What else can I do to help elect Jeff Miller as our next GOP Chairman?
Call or email your Republican friends in Arlington, tell them about the canvass this Saturday, and ask them to show up and vote for Jeff. Volunteer to call prospective voters for Jeff. Make a financial contribution to help defray the costs of printing and mailing. Also, you can have your name added to Jeff's list of supporters.
If you'd like to help out, please contact Jeff and indicate what you'd like to do.

Where can I go to ask other questions about the canvass?
Call Arlington GOP headquarters at 703-685-2488.

Cast your vote for a stronger GOP. Vote Jeff Miller this Saturday!
